Goodbye Twentysomething

Goodbye Twentysomething

The past 10 years have not been the best, it has been bitter sweet. A lot of disapointments, but also a lot of great experiences.

Just a year ago, I was concerned as I did not have everything I expected to have by the time I was 30, all I had was my businesses.

Now, just 6 months or so further forward, I have everything I need. A beautiful girlfriend, a fantastic family, a life in a hot country.

I am so happy with what I now have. I will not turn 30 kicking and screaming, I will instead roll through it with most of the people I love.

So, the plan for tomorrow is as follows:

10am Car and driver arrive. I hired a car and driver for the day.
11am Go to Ians Studio to pick up her wages.
12 midday We will head to the malls in Makati and spend a few hours shopping, picking up some wild turkey whiskey, maybe even going to the Hard Rock Cafe for our lunch.
2-3pm Arrive at Ians house and take the children out for a meal.
6-7pm Back to my house to watch movies, have a drink and maybe even go to the bar over the road.

What now?

What now?

A comment left on a lyrics site for a song I love, “Soon we’ll be dead” by Leftover Crack. The comment completely hit home as it is absolutely correct from my opinon. It is left by someone who knew some of the members of Leftover Crack before they became Leftover Crack.

“in our lives if you make it past 30 you’re over the hill and it’s only because you didn’t die of heroin when you used to or still do dope, after 35 as some of us are finding out if ya made it past heroin the alcohol from the hep-c that developed into cirrhosis kills ya by 35-40. i’m 33 failing liver, don’t dink anymore and never planned for life lasting this long and neither did they. when you wake up, you wonder who died today and amazing that you woke up. knowing him i’d say this song is a mixture of numbness, envy, and there’s also the image of all of them standing together toasting their chalices to us as we spill our 40 oz.”

The lyrics to “Soon we’ll be dead” by Leftover Crack:

Soon I’ll be dead, I’ll lay in my bed
I’ve made in my years, I won’t shed a tear

We’re all guilty anyways
The dumb games we all play
All tarnished and scarred, when did life get so hard?

We’ll drink to auld lang syne,
With fortified wine,
We’ll drink to tymes olde from pitchers of gold.

Soon we’ll be dead,
To death we’ll be wed,
We’ll slip on the ring, it ain’t a big thing

And though you may curse ‘thee’,
We’re angels of mercy
And sometimes we fall; ya can’t win them all.
(Or can you?)

I’ll pass out at dawn,
And dream of friends gone.
As the morbid embrace warms over my face.

And soon we’ll be dead, (Yeah, soon we’ll be dead)
Our brains and our heads, (My brains and my head)
They’ve always forgotten, when did life get so rotten?

Soon I’ll be dead,
I’ll lay in my bed.
I’ve made in my years, I won’t shed a tear

Soon we’ll be dead, (Soon we’ll be dead)
We’ll lay in our beds, (We’ll lay in our beds)
We’ve made in our years, we won’t shed a tear.

Soon we’ll be dead,
Our brains and our heads,
They’ve always forgotten, when did life get so rotten? (Yeah)

We won’t shed a tear…

memories not so distant

memories not so distant

With the taste of Red Horse at the back of my throat, it reminds me of those long summer days we spent wasted out of our tiny little minds sat outside at the Keelman with our coats on, a pint in one hand and a joint in the other.

With my eyes closed, I can almost hear the sounds of the tyne and smell the smell of summer next to the river.

We would almost run outside to those rays of sunshine beaming through the clouds. Now, I am 28’000 KM away hiding from the rays of sunsine from the very same sun at a slightly different angle. Hiding in my room with air conditioning and seeing the suns heavy rays outside. Living like this can be strange at times. The other day I was in a cab, it started to rain and the window fogged up. I wiped the window with my hand, but the condensation did not move. It was outside, not inside.

Hopefully in ten years, we will be looking back at drinking and laughing, wishing we were there back in those days in the philippines. I would give everything I have now to live those summer days forever, but I would not want the unhappiness I had then or the lack of income or lonliness or sorts.

Sooo damn hot!

Sooo damn hot!

The past few days have had thunderstorms in the evenings, but tonight there has been no storm. The time is 00:02 and its 34C outside! I think it must be at least 38C inside.

Working in this heat is almost unbearable. If I wear a shirt, I drip like a fucked tap.

There have been times I have had to take my laptop upstairs into to bedroom where I have air conditioning and can lower the temperature to a comfortable 21C. And that is where I’m heading right now!

Thunder storm outside just like the one in my head

Thunder storm outside just like the one in my head

The night before last I went to bed in the early evening. At just after 8pm I woke up to the sound of very heavy rain falling on the tin roof of my house. As I woke up the whole room flashed blue. It was a thunder storm.

Normally, the evening storms are over the sea. While I can still see them from my hourse, I can not normally hear them. A few times a week.

Now, I love thunder and lightening. As soon as I hear thunder I will rush to a window to watch the lightening. But when I saw this storm, i felt fear. It was like something from a horror movie. The trikes on the street started to stall from the very heavy rain.

The following video was recorded using my Sony Ericsson W800i mobile phone (sorry for the low quality). I was inside my bedroom with all doors and windows closed, recording the video through the window.

7.5 magnitude earthquake hits

7.5 magnitude earthquake hits

The Philippines is right next to the edge of the pacific and Indian oceans. As such, I keep a close eye on earthquakes in the region. I was quite shocked to see an earthquake as strong as this. Normally they range between 4 and 6 magnitude.

USGS stats of the earthquake can be found here.

The following details about the earthquake are taken from the BBC News website

An earthquake of 7.5 magnitude has hit near India’s Nicobar Islands, in the Indian Ocean.

The US Geological Survey said it occurred about 150km (95 miles) west of the Nicobar Islands and 440km from Sumatra, Indonesia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued a warning for the entire Indian Ocean region.

The agency later downgraded the warning to India only, before cancelling the alert altogether.

“Sea level readings indicate that a significant tsunami was not generated,” the Hawaii-based centre said.

No damage was reported in the Andaman and Nicobar islands, although a total blackout sparked panic in the capital, Port Blair, witnesses said.

More than 350,000 people live on nearly 600 islands in the remote archipelago.

In 2004, a powerful earthquake off Sumatra’s coast triggered a tsunami that killed more than 220,000 people around the rim of the Indian Ocean.

The Ataris – My Hotel Year

I love the lyrics to My Hotel Year by the Ataris. It reminds me so much of the move I made from the uk to the Philippines.

I saw the stars fall from the sky
And watched the tail lights fade away
As the sun began to witness a new day.

I drove five hundred thousand miles
To find a world unlike my own,
And now middle of nowhere seems like my home.

Alone, unknown… Yet fearing nothing but ourselves
Could be scarier than any crowded room.
I’m more alone with you than when I’m by myself.

Another night stuck on the vine,
Another low lit memory
Where time will slowly have it’s way with me.

We live our lives to expect the worst
But once it happens what is left?
We will never have to be surprised again.

Just you and me not saying much of anything
Sometimes could mean more than a thousand words
Goodbye, farewell to this fucked up world that was my former self.

We never seem to have the time until we waste it
All gone, goodbye…
Think and think alike, never seemed to have the time
Until one day it’s all gone, you’ve thrown it all away.

I’m glad you were a part of my hotel year.

Lightening strikes

Lightening strikes

I was out the front of our house with my girlfriend watering plants. It started raining heavy and we came back in through the front door. The back door was open and Jen, my maid, was outside cooking her dinner. Suddenly, I saw a white streak in the back yard through the open door, ending in a large white ball. A deafening bang followed. The lightening had came down, through the trees, into my yard and struck our water pump which was on at the time filling our water tank.

I ran through the house to check on Jen. I had no idea what state she could be in had she been close to it when it hit. I got to the back door just as she came running in.

Luckily, no one was hurt and nothing was damaged, but I can tell you, we all got a hell of a shock, Jen most of all as she was in the yard close to the pump when it struck.
