A footnote in the sand of our lives

Why can’t I keep my big mouth shut?

As most of you will know, I have been working within SEO/Web Development for a number of years and have a large client base. The biggest problem that I have found is that there are so many people and companies providing the same services when they have no experience at all and are completely clueless on what is really involved when it comes to SEO, SEM and Web Development.

I have interviewed many individuals and companies as I wanted to expand my SEO team and needed professionals who could do the work to the same standards as me. Yet, when I interviewed them, it quickly became clear that they were clueless. While I always hesitate to call these people scammers, I find it hard to find a better description for what it is that they are doing. It would be like a salesman selling you a fridge only for you to find out that it’s not a fridge at all, but a cooker. I simply detest anyone who claims they can do something and wants to charge for it when they actually have no idea at all how to do it. They are simply assuming that their client has less of an idea of how it is done and will never know that they are being ripped off.

When I see companies who do this, I can never idly stand by. I have to do something. I have to notify people of the situation.

This happened again yesterday. I saw a press release that claimed to be a PR company who used SEO. I checked the companies details and quickly built up a list of suspect information such as the poor SEO that had been done on their site. It seemed so poor that it was almost as if no SEO had been done at all. I also found out that the business was a “virtual business” with no postal address and the only phone numbers were mobile numbers. The final and most damning fact being that they were not even registered with the government here in the Philippines where their business is based.

After a few hours of research I had a lot of information and published it as a comment on the press release. It quickly attracted a lot of attention and comments came in from users who said that they were impressed with the level of in depth research that I had done on this issue.

Soon after, the business owner commented. He avoided all the issues I had posted and instead decided to simply try and brush it off by saying that as I was technically anonymous I can say whatever I want without consequences. That being true, I also stand by all my research. I am, after all, a professional. However, he is yet to actually reply to the issues that I had listed and the questions that I asked after his comment.

Now, it would seem as if I am going to have to take this issue further. The rest is top secret, but I will post full details as soon as it has been completed. You will be surprised to say the very least. I am sorry that I can not tell you any more, but you will get all the details as soon as I have authorization to release the information. For the time being, I have to keep it to myself.

However, I get one of my patented gut feelings that the business owner will threaten to kill me once he finds out what I will do. I do not just know how to do SEO with great success, I also have awards for clay pigeon shooting, obtaining 100% accuracy using a double barrelled semi automatic shotgun on fast, airborne, moving targets! Time to go gun shopping I think!

For now, this is 5uperman.

  1. One of the issues which I find particularly annoying is the number of people marketing themselves as Designers and Developers without basic knowledge of this field. They simply can use WordPress, sort of and believe that qualifies them to set up sites for other people. These individuals have no knowledge of the working of a site and come unstuck with the most basic errors. The problem with these people flying around is that it undermines the industry as a whole.

I have just finished writing a blog theme for a company who wanted an integrated news site adding to their existing site – the site they have is atrociously designed with poor structure – looking at the source code is a real eye opener – no doctypes and still (ugh) built on tables.

    • I agree. Both you and I find it harder to get business when there are competitors that are so cheap. Truth is that they are cheap because they do not know what they are doing.

      • Indeed. I am finding a lot of work I am getting at the moment are “fix jobs” – caused by them opting for a low cost under-qualified developer to produce a sub-standard site, leaving them to come to me to try and fix it for them (result usually it costs far more to fix than it would have done had they gone to a quality developer originally)

        • Sometimes customers have to learn the hard way. I interviewed another “Experienced link builder” who was looking for work. By the end of the interview, they admitted that they were not experienced and did not have time to read about the things they really should know because they needed to work and earn money building links. How is that not a scam? Ugh, I may publish this interview too.

          • That is an insane excuse. As a developer I have to work to earn money but I still have to keep up with the latest developments and improve my existing skills – to do so is to be left behind.

          • I couldnt agree more. They claimed that they were one of a team of 5, each member was given one keyword and each member had to make backlinks. After 1 year and 4 months the site had under 40 cached links. Based on 5 members, that is just 0.5 links per member, per month. HALF A LINK PER PERSON PER MONTH!!! WTF? Yet he seemed to think this was acceptable.

  2. DirektOnline.se spammed my website and my webhost removed it because of that. :(

    • That’s the problem with low cost SEO companies, they use methods that can cause your site to be banned. Also, a site that is not protected against spam will get a lot of comments and that will cause a massive load on the server.
