Hong Kong, not UK

Hong Kong, not UK

When I came to the Philippines, my initial plan was to stay as long as I could setting up a home and then go back to the UK for a week, then returning to the Philippines. This would allow me to enter under a new visa and stay in the Philippines while I continued setting up my business and eventually got my business visa.

However, a flight to the UK will cost around £2000 for myself and my girlfriend, but a weekend in Hong Kong will cost just £500 for us both. Plus, when I return to the Philippines from Hong Kong, I will be able to enter using my British passport which will give me a new visa.

At the moment, I simply can not afford the extra £1500 it would cost to fly to the UK, not to mention the spending money we would need for a week.

I will be flying back to the uk at some point, but just not yet. I am sorry for any disappointment, but god damn it it would take a whole day to get to the UK and you know how much I hate travelling anywhere!

The Ataris – My Hotel Year

I love the lyrics to My Hotel Year by the Ataris. It reminds me so much of the move I made from the uk to the Philippines.

I saw the stars fall from the sky
And watched the tail lights fade away
As the sun began to witness a new day.

I drove five hundred thousand miles
To find a world unlike my own,
And now middle of nowhere seems like my home.

Alone, unknown… Yet fearing nothing but ourselves
Could be scarier than any crowded room.
I’m more alone with you than when I’m by myself.

Another night stuck on the vine,
Another low lit memory
Where time will slowly have it’s way with me.

We live our lives to expect the worst
But once it happens what is left?
We will never have to be surprised again.

Just you and me not saying much of anything
Sometimes could mean more than a thousand words
Goodbye, farewell to this fucked up world that was my former self.

We never seem to have the time until we waste it
All gone, goodbye…
Think and think alike, never seemed to have the time
Until one day it’s all gone, you’ve thrown it all away.

I’m glad you were a part of my hotel year.

Malaria!

Malaria!

Before coming to the Philippines, I went to the doctors to get my shots. At the time, I went to the doctors as soon as I knew that I was going to he Philippines. Unfortunately there was not enough time to get my Hep B shot as it took 6 months. I was advised not to get any dentist work done while in the Philippines.

I made an appointment with the dental hospital to get a tooth extracted, but they said it would take 6 months to get a review and then another 6 months to get an appointment for the extraction. But I did not have that much time.

But while I was here in the Philippines, the tooth worsened and I had to go to see a dentist. In for a penny, in for a pound. I got all my fillings done, but when it came to extracting that one tooth, I bottled out. I have an insane fear of dentists I can not control.

I had also been to the chemist in the uk on the advice of my doctor. I needed anti malarial tablets. “when will you be returning” she asked. “I am not returning, I am moving there” I replied. The problem was that you needed to take these tablets for a week before you left and for four weeks after you return. These are the instructions on the packaging, as such the women in the chemist had no idea what to do if someone is not returning.

I bought a few packs and started taking them as instructed. One per day, plus one per week of the weekly tablet. No problems.

Now, after I have finished all my tablets and am looking for more do I find that the instructions state that the dose I have been taking is half the dose I should have been taking. Is there any point buying more? Should I get more and take the correct dosage?

What the hell do I do when I have moved here and will not be returning to the uk, so can not take the 4 weeks dosage that the instructions suggest?

Here I am working mostly at night and I usually end up with a load of insect bites on my ankles.  If just one of them has malaria, I am fucked. I don’t have any health insurance at the moment as I am waiting for my application to complete.

and then the rain came (again)

and then the rain came (again)

The weather has really been giving me a treat. First, there was a white Christmas, the first one I have seen in over 29 years. Now, on the final week of me being in the uk, it rains constantly.

I went out for a walk today and took my camera along. I managed to get a few pics of the countryside, river Tyne and the gloomy, angry looking sky.

Another day of snow

Another day of snow

It snowed again today, but as the sun came up, it quickly melted away. I took a few pics and 2 videos while outside this morning.

3 weeks to go

Now with only 3 weeks left before I board my flight from Newcastle (NCL) to Heathrow (LHR), where I will have just under 2 hours to find my connecting flight to Hong Kong, where I will also be catching a connecting flight to Manila, the Philippines.

If you have been reading my blog, you will know that I have posted about this a lot over the past few weeks.

If you haven’t been reading my blog, shame on you! You can view these posts by visiting my “Philippines 2010” category or you can check out my in depth post about my journey to the Philipines lasting 19 hours and 45 minutes in all!

As I sit in my room surrounded by the remains of my life I start to have serious doubts that I can get it all to my parents in two trips.

I have today to finish packing everything, on sunday I will be moving, on monday I will be working with my dev team for most of the day.

I can not wait until I land in the Philippines. But to mention that, I can not wait until I get to Heathrow and see the British Airways 747-400 as I have never been on one before. Better still, I have never flown with British Airways and was surprised to see that they serve complimentary food and drinks throughout the entire flight. Whoop Whoop!

I will likely have some automated posts so that my blog tells you exactly where I am in my journey on March 6th and 7th.
